First, we want to tell you the answers to 3 important questions there are things that will keep anyone busy who is just starting out with home roasting busy:
1. What is the difference between commercial coffee roasting and home roasting?
The goal of commercial roasting The goal is to roast large quantities of coffee with consistent quality over an extended period. This requires massive drum roasters that weigh tons and cost as much as a family car. We recommend you don't try to replicate that level of success when roasting at home.
Instead, you should Expand your coffee knowledge and have fun by roasting your own coffee at home . The great thing is that you'll always achieve a specialty coffee flavor.
2. What should you keep in mind as a home roaster?
The coffee beans reach a temperature of approximately 200 degrees during roasting and in the process, as with any roasting process, Some smoke . Therefore, you should observe the beans during the roasting process and roast near an open window or a switched-on extractor hood.
3. What do you need to roast coffee at home?
Green coffee beans
If you use high-quality coffee beans for home roasting, you will almost certainly achieve a better taste compared to supermarket coffee. In other words – You can't roast good coffee from bad green coffee beans . You can find out how important the quality of coffee beans is to us in the... Part 1 this tutorial.
A kitchen scale
From a 250g package of green coffee beans you can expect approximately 210-220g of roasted coffee, since the beans lose some weight (and increase in volume). That's about 20-25 cups of coffee, which is usually enough for one person's weekly needs.
With the home roaster We recommend roasting approximately 50g at a time.
In the convection oven – 100 g. To measure this amount, you need kitchen scales.
Roasted beans as a reference
Get whole beans to your liking (e.g., filter roasted) from a roaster you trust. You can use their color as a guide during roasting to achieve your desired taste.
→ In our Home roaster sets We've included Jaime's Specialty Coffee roast for you as a reference. This allows you to taste the roast and... You'll know exactly what color you want to achieve . Depending on whether you prefer filter coffee or espresso, you'll find the right set with pre-roasted coffee here.
A home roaster or a convection oven
The results you The results you can achieve with a home roaster are more consistent than with a convection oven , which is why we recommend this method.
→ A good option for beginners is the popcorn machine from Severin, which is featured in our Starter Set Included. You can find more information about the exact roasting process in Part 3 (Roasting with a home roaster) and Part 4 (Roasting in a convection oven) of this tutorial.
A sieve
After roasting, you should Cool the coffee down as quickly as possible . You'll need a sieve for this. Stir the brewed beans in it – ideally outside or in front of a window. If you don't cool the coffee, it will continue to bake, as the inside of the bean will have heated up to 200 degrees Celsius. This will result in an undesirable bready taste.
A rag
During roasting, very thin skins, also called silverskin, detach from the beans. If you're roasting in a convection oven, you should wipe the inside surface with a damp cloth afterward. If you're using a home roaster, you should place a sieve with a damp cloth in it in front of the appliance. The silverskin will collect there.
